Manufacturers across the world continually search for ways to improve their current operations and gain a competitive edge over their competitors.  The transition to new technologies or manufacturing processes brings with it certain problems that manufacturers cannot solve on their own.  Our goal is to leverage our knowledge of collaborative problem solving to provide innovative solutions to these manufacturers.

Since Virginia Tech is surrounded by a pool of local manufacturers, including Volvo Trucks, Danaher Corporation, Moog Corporation, Corning, Federal Mogul, Metalsa, Wolverine and others, CIbM will form strategic partnerships with these firms.  The center will be able to test and verify problem-solving approaches and methodologies, while companies will benefit from the results of problem-solving activities, hence further growing the industry-university interaction.

Another critical aspect of the interaction with industrial partners is the transfer of knowledge of successful innovation and problem solving practices.  CIbM will focus on developing training modules that will focus on cross-functional approaches in these areas.
